"The kind of fundamental shift in attitudes and
behaviour we are seeking to achieve will
require cultural changes at many levels
.
First, the motivation and commitment of individuals
to learn will need to be increased. Their
involvement in lifelong learning should both come
to reflect their interests and priorities and engage
them in shaping and supporting their own learning
throughout their lives
."
'Creating Learning Cultures: Next Steps in
Achieving the Learning Age', Professor R F Fryer, 1999
Background
The Foundation was formed in 1997 as an independent
organisation dedicated to advancing policy and practice
in the field of lifelong learning. To this end, we fund a
wide-ranging R&D portfolio focussed on transforming
learning attitudes, policies and practices in UK.
Objective
Our principal objective is to create and win support for
a radical, holistic and evidence-based perspective on
learning suited to preparing people for the challenges
and opportunities of the 21st Century and beyond. Our
approach is based on:
-
Encouraging original and radical
thinking
-
Creating an interdisciplinary
perspective
-
Helping shape policies for lifelong
learning
-
Funding R&D projects that
generate
outcomes with the potential for application
-
Promoting directly, and through
partnerships
an on-going, well-informed and imaginative
public and professional debate.
